Portsmouth Tea
Portsmouth’s Very Own Cup of Tea
A blend steeped in history
Portsmouth has a remarkable connection with Britain’s love affair with tea.
On 14 May 1662, Catherine of Braganza arrived in Portsmouth from Portugal to marry King Charles II. The Portuguese court had already developed a taste for tea, and Catherine brought that tea-drinking habit with her. As Queen, she helped make tea fashionable at the English court – setting Britain on the road to becoming a nation of tea drinkers.
More than 360 years later, we thought Portsmouth deserved a tea of its own.
Portsmouth Tea is our English Breakfast blend, created specifically to make a great cup of tea in Portsmouth and South Hampshire’s notoriously hard water.
We combine carefully selected black teas from India and Zimbabwe to produce a strong, full-bodied brew with plenty of character, without needing to leave the tea stewing in the pot.
It’s proper everyday tea: rich, satisfying and uncomplicated, with a story that belongs right here in Portsmouth.
Tasting Notes
A rich, rounded black tea with a warm amber colour and plenty of body.
There’s a satisfying malty character, balanced by a clean, smooth finish. It’s strong enough to stand up beautifully to milk, but good enough to drink on its own.
And because Portsmouth Tea was blended specifically for hard water, you can get a good, strong cup without over-brewing it. The longer tea brews, the more bitterness and astringency you extract, so a stronger blend means you don’t have to leave it sitting there for ages.
How to Brew Portsmouth Tea
Loose Leaf
Use approximately one teaspoon of tea per cup. Add freshly boiled water and brew for around 2-3 minutes. Strain and add milk if you take it.
Want it stronger? Use a little more tea rather than simply brewing it for longer.
Tea Bags
Place one tea bag in your mug, add freshly boiled water and brew for around 3 minutes. Remove the bag and add milk to taste.
